The majestic Serra de Tramuntana on the island of Mallorca was given UNESCO World Heritage Site designation in 2011. The spine of Mallorca is made up of this impressive mountain range called Serra de Tramuntana, which stretches from Andratx in the southwest to the Cap de Formentor in the far north of the island. This mountain range walk is nearly 90 kilometers long.
The Tramuntana is a synthesis of Islamic and Western traditions as well as man's capacity to coexist peacefully with nature. A defining characteristic of the mountainous terrain is the dry stone terraces, which were constructed to provide room for growing produce in a relatively difficult agricultural environment during the Arab occupation of Mallorca.
How to explore Serra de Tramuntana?
- The name of the longest long-distance trail in the Balearics comes from the abundance of dry stone constructions in Tramuntana. From Andratx to Pollença, the 8-stage Dry Stone Route (GR221) provides hikers with an authentic and varied view of 'the other Mallorca' and the opportunity to walk on ancient cobblestone routes that previously connected mountain settlements. The official mountain refuges along the Dry Stone Route provide inexpensive dining and lodging options.
- There are beautiful vantage points to take in the breathtaking sea or landscape as you go through pine forests, through mountain ranges covered in rocks, or through valleys of fruit trees.
- Ancient dry stone terracing and walls, as well as nature's own sculptures, and gnarled centuries-old olive trees, dominate Tramuntana's rural environment. There are also cities and villages worth visiting for their cultural and historical significance here.
- Many idyllically located monasteries can be found in Mallorca's mountains, and they are best visited on foot.
- Find out more about the historic town of Andratx, including its weekly market, top modern art gallery, and excellent dining options.
- Visit the impressive Santa Maria church, located in the southwest rural market town of Andratx.
- Explore the old town of Valldemossa in West Mallorca, surrounded by the Tramuntana mountain range, to see its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage.
- Extreme sports enthusiasts can enjoy a heart-pounding adventure playground in the Tramuntana's wilder and more isolated areas. Mallorca has become a popular destination for sports like coasteering, rock climbing, and canyoning because of the chances provided by the dramatic and difficult rocky landscape.
